HARRISBURG, Nov. 19 – State Rep. Joe Webster, D-Montgomery, today announced the awarding of nearly $2 million in grants poised to enhance and propel road projects in the 150 th Legislative District. These grants were awarded through the Commonwealth Financing Authority’s Multimodal Transportation Fund program. “This much needed influx in funding is earmarked to improve roadways in both Lower Providence Township and Upper Providence Township,” Webster said. “It is no secret that our infrastructure, particularly our roadways, is aging and must be invested in to benefit all of the individuals who use these roadways daily. “Failing to properly invest in our infrastructure right now could have potential catastrophic consequences to our economic future and overall quality of life. I applaud this funding and look forward to seeing these envisioned projects become a reality,” he added. Lower Providence Township was awarded $1.75 million for intersection improvements along Park Avenue at Crawford Road and Eaglesville Road. The project will realign the roadways of Park Avenue, Crawford Road and Eaglesville Road to eliminate the offset intersection and install a traffic signal. Upper Providence Township was awarded $212,330 designated to be utilized for preliminary engineering costs for a roundabout at the intersection of Dreibelbis Road, Black Rock Road, and 2 nd Avenue. Masks Required in K-12 Schools, Early Learning, and Child Care Settings to Keep Our Schools Open and Students in the Classroom Earlier today, Acting Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Alison Beam, announced that beginning September 7, 2021, masks will be required in schools, early learning, and childcare settings. This order focuses directly on protecting students and keeping them in schools. This order applies to everyone indoors at K-12 public schools, including brick and mortar and cyber charter schools, private and parochial schools, career and technical centers (CTCs), and intermediate units (IUs). Gerrymandering Yesterday, the Legislative Reapportionment Commission voted in favor of House Democratic Leader Joanna McClinton’s resolution to end the practice of prison gerrymandering. The commission’s action changes the current practice of counting incarcerated individuals as residents of the prison location rather than their previous residential address for drawing state House and Senate districts. Prison gerrymandering was a poor practice from the beginning, and this change is a vital step towards fairness and equity in Pennsylvania elections. Prison gerrymandering is advantageous politically for those who would prefer to have control even when they are in the minority. In 1980, there were a handful of state prisons in Pennsylvania.
