Commentary - Have a miscarriage in a hospital? PA Republicans are ready to charge you for it.

(Jun 24, 2021)

Have a miscarriage in a hospital? PA Republicans are ready to charge you for it. Recently, members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives voted on a slew of anti-abortion bills that would harm women all over the state. One bill, H.B. 118, prime sponsored by Rep. Francis Ryan, R-Lebanon, would create an unnecessary, draconian requirement for hospitals and clinics to make funeral arrangements for fetal remains at any stage of pregnancy. Not only does this bill impose extra costs on health care facilities and women who do not wish to use the disposition arrangements made by these facilities, it compromises patient privacy by essentially creating a state database of miscarriages and abortions. The bill shames and penalizes women for miscarrying and exercising their right to choose. House Democratic female representatives provided rebuttal testimony on the bill capturing their stories of loss, trauma and difficult decisions. I was one of these women. I shared my experience birthing what would have been my only child with my husband Roy, who was stillborn. I could not imagine what it would have been like if hospital staff entered the birthing room afterwards, asking questions about fetal remains and disposition. The proposed legislation will traumatize women across the state who are already facing incredibly difficult circumstances. State Rep. Melissa Shusterman, D-Chester, stated that H.B. 118 is an “incredibly invasive and misguided mandate…It Read more

(Jun 10, 2021)

STROUDSBURG, June 10 – In keeping with her commitment to bring home much needed grant funding, state Rep Maureen Madden, D-Monroe, said the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency has awarded Monroe County $347,660 in state grants for senior housing and other low-income rehabilitation services. Madden said housing assistance can make a significant difference in the economic well-being of low-income families. “Decent affordable housing enables families on tight budgets to spend their hard-earned dollars on food to feed their families and on health care and I am pleased that Monroe County agencies will get the funding they need to continue providing affordable housing,” Madden said Madden said the following agencies have received funding: $150,000 to Monroe County Senior Housing Rehabilitation Redevelopment Authority of Monroe County. PHARE funds will be used to assist qualified low-income senior homeowners (60 or older) with necessary repairs on their homes to diminish substandard senior housing units, maintain and extend the life of existing affordable housing inventory, correct health and safety hazards and improve the quality of life and independence for the senior homeowner population of Monroe County. $125,000 to Family Promise of Monroe/Pike Counties for homelessness prevention/rapid rehousing to provide emergency housing in partnership with Pike County Human Read more

Madden: $78,258 grant to Monroe County Adult Probation and Parole

(Jun 09, 2021)

MONROE, June 9 – In keeping with her commitment to bring home much-needed grant funding, state Rep Maureen Madden, D-Monroe, announced today the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency has awarded Monroe County a $78,258 grant for adult probation and parole services. Madden said it is important to properly fund adult probation and parole services because those services can improve probation outcomes and reduce prison costs. “Funding this program provides offenders an opportunity to be more successful while on probation through effective treatment and assistance programs that they need, such as drug treatment, mental health counseling and employment assistance,” Madden said. Act 114 of 2019 provides for the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency to review and approve county adult probation and parole grant funding, which includes improvement of adult probation services grant-in-aid funds. Under the act, a county, such as Monroe County, that provides adult probation services can receive grant funding from the state through the PCCD for costs incurred by the county, but only to the extent that the staff and programs meet the qualifications and standards established by PCCD. More information on PCCD grants is available here. Read more

Madden to introduce bill for full bariatric health insurance coverage

(May 05, 2021)

HARRISBURG, May 5 – State Rep. Maureen Madden, D-Monroe, plans to introduce legislation that would ensure health insurance coverage for people who need bariatric surgery for health reasons. Bariatric surgery on the stomach or intestines is designed to help patients with extreme obesity lose weight. Madden said bariatric surgery is a procedure of last resort for people, who, despite adopting medically recommended weight-loss programs, are unable to improve their body mass index. “According to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, nearly 70 to 80% of patients suffering from high blood pressure no longer require their medications and maintain normal blood pressure six months post operation,” Madden said. “Despite these statistics, insurers deny approximately 25% of patients considering the procedure three times before giving approval, and during that time patients may experience worsening health and out-of-pocket costs.” In addition, Madden said the report indicates 90% of patients with Type 2 diabetes enjoy reduction or complete freedom from all medications after the surgery, and blood sugar levels are maintained at normal values. She said patients with heartburn, high cholesterol, lower back pain and stress incontinence often see relief of all symptoms within a few days to weeks after surgery. “My legislation would automatically open pathways to better health for Pennsylvanians who face these challenges by Read more
