HARRISBURG, June 25 – State Rep. Dan Deasy, D-Allegheny, today announced that the Sheraden Healthy Active Living Center and the Elizabeth Seton Center in Brookline were awarded a combined total of $77,000. The funding was awarded through the Pennsylvania Department of Aging’s 2019-20 Senior Community Center grant program. Deasy said the grants will help senior centers fund projects based on their applications, such as updating and modernizing facilities, providing new health and entertainment programs, upgrading technology and enhancing marketing opportunities. “Senior centers are instrumental to the quality of life for our senior community,” Deasy said. “They provide our most vulnerable population the resources to engage in healthy activities, socialization and provide nutritious meals that help keep the senior community healthy. This funding is going to go a long way in helping both senior centers remain the go-to place in the 27 th Legislative District for senior or retirement living.” There are more than 500 senior community centers throughout Pennsylvania that provide a variety of offerings, such as nutritious meals, educational opportunities, transportation services, financial and insurance counseling, and exercise programs. Noting the additional financial burdens and loss of fundraising income opportunities caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and incurred by Pennsylvania volunteer fire companies and veterans’ organizations, state Rep. Dan Deasy, D-Allegheny, said he is applauding the unanimous passage this week of H.B. 1048, legislation that would exempt the $700 liquor licensee surcharge for these fire companies and veterans’ organizations. HARRISBURG, May 6 – Noting the sudden and unexpected loss of income incurred by Pennsylvania residents and small business owners due to COVID-19, state Rep. Dan Deasy, D-Allegheny, has introduced a resolution urging the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission to put a freeze on all requests for utility rate increases through 2020. “Residents are experiencing financial hardships, unemployment rates are through the roof, and the public and state assistance offered to families and small businesses is but a small drop in a bucket to address the of loss of income and financial insecurity because of COVID-19,” Deasy said. “You’d think during a time like this, we’d see more compassion, but unfortunately that’s not the case, especially with utility companies. Rate increases are the last thing our struggling residents and businesses should have to worry about, which is why this resolution is so crucial during this global health crisis,” Deasy said. Aside from the increase proposals, Deasy said he was even more disappointed in the scale of which some companies were trying to raise their rates, with at least one company seeking a 24% rate increase.
